COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS TO CREATE A "TENT CITY" ON CAMPUS AS A CALL TO SUPPORT THE CALIFORNIA DREAM ACT
SAN JOSÉ, CA—) A large number of San José City College students will be sleeping on campus in tents on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 in an effort to create awareness of the California Dream Act. The campus group, MEChA, Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanos de Aztlan, is sponsoring a“Dream In” similar to a “sit in” as a message to dream of a better future.
The students are planning a day of speakers and will be setting up tents in front of the General Education Quad area on campus. They are rallying for the passage of the California DREAM (Development, Relief, and Education for Undocumented Minors) Act, SB 1301, which will provide economic support for both U.S. citizen and undocumented students. “It is critical we have an open-door policy for our students. Many have overcome great hardships just to set foot on our campuses and we owe it to them to provide them with the access and financial assistance they need to succeed,” says Rosa G. Pérez, San José/Evergreen Community College District Chancellor.
The “Dream In” also serves as a pre-rally to the March in March Student Advocacy Day taking place next week in Sacramento. Many students from Evergreen Valley College and San José City College are planning to attend in busloads next Monday, March 16.
Media parking will be located at San José City College, at 2100 Moorpark Avenue at the Leland Street turnaround.
