SAN JOSE— Though candidates for Evergreen Valley Community College’s position of Vice President of Academic Affairs applied from around the country, the college found the leadership it needed from within. On March twenty-third Evergreen Valley College President David Wain Coon announced Kuniko (Kuni) Hay as the college’s new Vice President of Academic Affairs.

“This is a great day for Evergreen Valley College,” said President David Wain Coon. “Kuni’s tremendous expertise and experience will serve EVC well. She has designed, created and managed programs for improving instruction, facilitating learning, and supporting students. I’m confident she will be a perfect fit here.”

Hay, who has served as interim vice president at EVC since October 2005, has nineteen years of experience in Higher Education at the administrative, managerial and instructional levels. First hired as a Program Counselor/Advisor at Boston College, Ms. Hay moved on to serve as the Assistant Director of the Learning to Learn Program as well as teaching in the Psychology Department. In 1995 Ms. Hay moved across the country to serve as the Director of the Multicultural Opportunities for Developing Excellence in Leadership program at the University of San Francisco. In 2001 Ms. Hay accepted a position as Vice President for Student Affairs at Holy Names College in Oakland. Until her hiring at EVC as an interim Vice President of Instruction, Ms. Hay worked at Cañada College as a Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences. Ms. Hay has also worked as a Conflict Resolution Trainer and Multicultural Educational Consultant.

Ms. Hay received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech and Communication from the University of Hawaii; Master of Arts in Human Development (with emphasis on Multicultural Counseling), from Boston College; and has done further work in Educational and Developmental Psychology at Boston College.

Ms. Hay has deep passion for educational access, social justice and equity in higher education and has participated in a wide range of professional organizations including serving as a board member on the New England Opportunity for Program Personnel (NEAOPP); as a Northern California board member of the American Council of Education Office of Women in Higher Education; membership in the Association of California Community College Administrators (ACCCA), and; as a American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) fellow on the Community College Leadership Development Initiatives.
