Kindergarteners go to College!
SAN JOSÉ, CA— It's never too early to start to instill the idea of a college education in a child. And, that’s what happened on April 23 when nearly 2000 kindergarteners from the Alum Rock Union School District visited Evergreen Valley College and San José City College to experience “KinderCaminata,” the 4th annual child-oriented “career fair,” that provides children a promise of higher education.
The students met face to face with police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and others. They also participated in arts and crafts activities. At EVC, character mascots Splash, the dolphin from the Morgan Hill Aquatics Center and Gigante, from the San Jose Giants entertained the kids. Over at SJCC, a music stage and stations around campus offered a variety of activity. Some children even learned what it takes to get into the School of Cosmetology.
“At a time when education is at the forefront of our state’s budget crisis, it is critical for us to continue to support the future leaders and open the doors to opportunity for the class of 2025 who may one day attend our colleges, says Rosa Pérez, Chancellor, San José/Evergreen Community College District.
The kindergarteners also got a taste for service learning and when they arrived, delivered a box of crayons to send to our friends in El Salvador.
KinderCaminata started in Southern California in 1994 and has since expanded to other California colleges. KinderCaminata coincides with El Dia Del Niño (Day of the Child) and is a very special holiday in Mexico and Central America when families and schools let their children know how much they are loved. It is the San José/Evergreen Community College District’s (SJECCD) intention, through KinderCaminata, to provide the same care and support in partnership with the schools and families in our community.
