OLDEST RUNNING COSMETOLOGY PROGRAM IN CALIFORNIA'S COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM OPENS ITS DOORS IN A NEW LOCATION AFTER 50 YEARS
SAN JOSÉ, CA— San José College School of Cosmetology and Esthetics will be celebrating its Grand Opening in a new location while highlighting 50 years of student success. The Grand Opening Celebration will be on Friday, May 15, 2009 at 10:30 am at San José City College (SJCC) located at 2100 Moorpark Avenue in San José. Students preparing for their annual spring show will be promoting their work, special guest speakers will be on hand, VIP "models" will take part in getting specialized treatments, and an official ribbon cutting will take place.
The School of Cosmetology has transformed 41-year-old student Mike Schmidt, who, after 10 years working in the high tech industry, lost his job, and needed to find a whole new career. "This school is intense with a full regimen. I am working harder now with a purpose, only not getting paid, but it's all worth it." Schmidt says he looked into some of the private schools in the area, but chose SJCC for its prestigious reputation and its affordability.
SJCC President Dr. Michael Burke says "we are the best kept secret in San José. And we are the best school in the region, period." The School of Cosmetology and Esthetics has a waiting list with 2000-3000 applicants every year, so it generally takes about two years before a student enrolls into the program. "The students in Cosmetology and Esthetics graduate with critical thinking skills and job opportunities, plus they receive exceptional training in the process," says President Burke.
San José/Evergreen Community College District Chancellor Rosa G. Pérez is a strong advocate for education focused on career training, and says "even with a downturn in the economy, Cosmetology is a stable field with a high demand. Our program is excellent and attracts students from the range of diverse cultures and life experiences in our country. We are proud of our quality, our diversity and our commitment to the industry."
